First and foremost, it is nothing like 628 nautical miles. You’d be happy if your overall track was in the low 700s, but none the less, the windward/leeward part is true enough. Whilst the Sydney Hobart Race may look like a passage race from A to B, invariably it almost takes the guise of a laid course. If you’re having a particularly bad time, the kite gear may even stay clipped to the rail ... [more]

RMSIR 2015 – on the green, and down to the short strokes by Guy Nowell, Sail-World Asia, Langkawi, Malaysia
Literally. In the regatta so far there have been three long coastal races and one cans race, in Penang. Now we are here fro the last two days in magical Langkawi, a place of improbable geography and perverse geology, and for all we know the place where the bong tree grows. Haven’t seen any owls or pussycats yet, but there’s a beautiful pea green boat called 3Itch that joined the fleet in Penang. ... [more]

RMSIR 2015 – Just what the doctor ordered by Guy Nowell, Sail-World Asia, Langkawi, Malaysia
The last passage race of the Raja Muda, from Penang to Langkawi, usually delivers the best breeze of the three passage races in the series. Yesterday’s race ran true to form, right down to a light air start after the RO had moved the Committee Boat up the course in search of wind. ... [more]

After a couple of general recall for premature starting Race 4 got underway with the fleet splitting into a left hand group led by John Junior (NZ) and the majority of the fleet going in the opposite direction heading across on port tack into the Rangitoto Channel, and to fight the tide. However, as luck would have it, there was more wind in terms of pressure in the Channel ... [more]

RMSIR 2015. Suddenly – nothing happened. by Guy Nowell, Sail-World Asia, Penang, Malaysia
Penang has over the years delivered some of the hottest, lightest, flukiest and most frustrating sailing weather of the entire regatta. Fix-it suggestions have ranged from the simple “scrap the Penang Inshore races” to the more fanciful “why not use the rickshaw results, instead?”, neither of which have gained much traction. What usually happens is that there is a long wait, a few water balloons ... [more]
