Tight racing for the Sydney 38s in Geelong
Tue, 17 Sep 2013

Mixed results across the 10 entrants on the final day of the Morris Finance Sydney 38 Short Course Regatta, proving One Design racing is tight. Despite three bullets for the series, Phoenix were pipped in the final race by another local Geelong boat Cinquante and lost the overall win by a mere half a point. Yachting legend Lou Abrahams joined his team on Challenge today, who finished on equal points to Phoenix but came third overall on a countback.

During presentations, Victorian Chapter organiser for the 38s fleet, Rowan Simpson highlighted that the Corinthian crews were just too good over the weekend. The amateur crews of Cinquante and Phoenix dominated the top spots with Playground coming in third in the Corinthian division.

Ian Murray was pleased post race, 'We started the day, down in the doldrums because of yesterday's results, but we cleaned the hull this morning. We had good starts and Jake Newman (tactician) picked the breezes pretty well. A much better day with more constant breeze with a bit of strength in it, compared to yesterday's fluky conditions. Today we picked it alot better.'

Brenton Carnell (skipper of Phoenix) commented on the weekend's racing, 'It was a long day on the water, and we've not sailed the boat in 12 knots of breeze before, so trim settings were very different. We are still learning the boat, but it was fantastic racing.'
