St. Francis Interconference Regatta 2013 - Shifty and fluky weekend
Mon, 1 Apr 2013
St. Francis Interconference Regatta 2013. Racing for the StFYC Interconference began just after 1100h on Saturday March 30, 2013. Breeze started at seven knots from 260 degree and clocked right to 300 degree. Two A Division and two B Division races were sailed in the clocking breeze with the B Division sailing in cross course current by the end of Race Two. Breeze died for 15 minutes and built back from the prevailing angle of 240 degree.
It was shifty and puffy with gusts up to 25 knots and as low as eight knots, going through big shift cycles. Sailing was tricky and the best teams identified the switching tide and wind shifts and put the two together for net gain. Overall it was a nice day of sailing with six races for both divisions completed. Sailing resumes tomorrow at 1000h with rain and breeze forecasted. Special thanks to Danielle Richards, Mike Segerblom, Regatta Chair Russ Silvestri, PRO Robbie Dean, Protest Chair Grant Baldwin, and the rest of the Race Committee team.
Day two of the StFYC Interconference started with calm air and sunshine. After visiting the StFYC Easter Petting Zoo and face painting station the teams sailed out for racing in front of the clubhouse at 1100h, with breeze at 120 degree at seven knots. The first set for A Div was fluky with the second race ending up becalmed just after the first few finishers crossed the line. It was a tough one but it was in the bag.
The sailors rotated to B Div but had to wait for breeze in the cove venue. With Bob Billingham and team at the top mark and Russ Silvestri and team on the gate marks the RC got everything re-set in good order. The wind built out of 270° at five knots and stayed there for the rest of the day. A few left shifts and squalls left the sailors dealing with some challenges. Overall it was a great weekend of sailing. Congratulations to the University of Washington Women's Team and the Stanford Cardinal co-ed for winning their respective divisions. Special thanks to Regatta Chair Russ Silvestri, Protest Chair Grant Baldwin, PRO Robbie Dean, Mike Segerblom, Danielle Richards and to StFYC for putting on a fantastic regatta.
