Volvo Ocean Race: Call to Alvimedica - Two days out from Cape Horn *Feature by Richard Gladwell, Sail-World.com NZL
Team Alvimedica watch captain, Ryan Houston says the Southern Ocean Leg of the Volvo Ocean Race has had racing as close as you would expect in a Coastal Race. All the top group are within sight of each other, and there have been some close passing maneuvers with the boats sailing at 25-30kts. The fleet is expected to be hit with a series of fronts with winds gusting to 45-50kts. ... [more]

... [more]

If racing sailors could choose . . . it would be for consistent wind of 20-22 knots, sunshine and courses that are not of the repeated windward/leeward variety and occasional natural hazards. Those attending the St. Thomas International Regatta had exactly that today. The natural hazards struck hard with some – beach catamarans upside down are difficult to right ... [more]

Solo Basse Normandie - Eyes on the tracker by Artemis Offshore Academy
Despite early sunshine in Granville, it was a grey start to 188 mile Solo Basse Normandie (Friday 27th March) with fine drizzle reducing visibility and just seven knots of wind on the start line for 24 competitors to play with. However, the gloom was soon pierced by the beaming white smile of Artemis Offshore Academy Rookie Rob Bunce (Artemis 37), as he started his competitive solo Figaro career ... [more]

Barcelona World Race - Home waters by Barcelona World Race
Neutrogena, sailed by Barcelona's Guillermo Altadill and Chilean co-skipper José Munoz, should return into Mediterranean this evening. Once more One Planet, One Ocean & Pharmaton are defying expectations and sailing quicker upwind than their rivals, 150 miles to their west, We Are Water. Current routeings have the two Catalan IMOCA 60's only hours apart at Gibraltar, too close to call right now. ... [more]

Looking at the tracker right now it reminds me of the 1979 Atari Super Breakout game. The top five boats have been up and down all day, gybing along the ice limit as they head southeast. You see them sailing downwind on port tack doing 18 to 20 knots of speed on average. ... [more]
