The 2014 Circuito Mexicano de Vela began in Puerto Aventuras with the third edition of the Copa Riviera Maya. Circuito Mexicano consists of eight stops, that take place across Mexico and hosts both big boats and dinghies. A real festival of sails in which the national Mexican team emerges from its final ranking.
Circuito Mexicano de Vela hosts both national and international participants from Guatemala, USA, Argentina and other countries competing in seven classes (Laser Standard, Laser Radial, Hobie 16, RS:X, Optimist, 420 and Bic Techno Class). And the level is high enough with many of the young athletes battling out for a spot at the 2014 ISAF youth sailing worlds that will take place in Portugal during the summer.
The first day of the event started with rain during the morning, not the best possible conditions but luckily soon the rain stopped and under the cloudy weather the first races started. The wind was quite strong and in combination with the strong current that was reaching 3.5 mph, it made sailing harder for the competitors. The championship started well with all classes completing their scheduled races.
As the skies cleared during the second day, the sun came and so did the wind. Conditions were very good with stable offshore wind that was reaching up to 15 knots and with bigger waves making it more challenging for the sailors. The day closed with all classes completing their schedule and athletes having a tough and demanding day in the water. So, recharging the batteries before the last day was crucial.
On the final day there were strong winds, hard competition and capsizes. The races were over and the results were formed.
Next stop for the Circuito Mexicano de Vela is in late March. With events covering almost all year long, the Circuito is keeping the interest high and the sailors active travelling around Mexico and visiting beautiful places. The MexORC and the Copa WesMex are the next two that will take place almost at the same time, and include both offshore and dinghy classes. The action is transferred to the west coast of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean.
